Tulsi Virani has finally arrived. For the past few months, all that fans have been able to discuss is the return of Smriti Irani to Television with the reboot version of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Honestly, this is one show that is so strongly etched in everyone's memory that the return did not feel like a return! Ekta Kapoor has brought back the show with a mix of old and new cast. The promos promised that the show will all be about progressive thinking and new trends while being in-sync with the 'sanskars'. But have the makers been able to keep up with the promise?
What happens in the first episode of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Thi?
The first episode of Kyunki Saas Kabhi Bahu Thi is titled as - A New Chapter of Tulsi, but with the looks of it, it does not seem like anything new. The episode begins with Smriti Irani offering water to Tulsi (plant) - a scene that is so familiar to all. She then introduces the characters of the show in her old style. Some new while some old faces have returned to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Amar Upadhaya has returned as Mihir Virani. The first episode is all about Tulsi and Mihir's 38th wedding anniversary. The episode is filled with nostalgia as the visuals jump between flashbacks and latest scenes. Baa is no more and Tulsi dearly misses her. Even Tulsi's mother-in-law, played by Aparna Mehta previously, is no more. She misses them dearly as she remembers the old happy yet bittersweet memories. Other stars like Hiten Tejwani, Gauri Pradhan, Anand Shakti and others have also returned. Tulsi, as usual, is living in a massive house that is maintained by her. Everyone's lives revolve around her and nobody can function without yelling Tulsi's name. Be it her son or daughter-in-law, everyone is dependent her. "Ghar hum akele sambhalte hain," dialogue says it all.
Who is the villain?
No Indian Television drama is without a villain. This time around, Tulsi's chachi Gayatri played by Kamalika Guha is the villain. After the passing of Baa and Savita Virani, she thought she would be the one to take up the charge of the house. However, Tulsi became the head of the house and she isn't quite happy with it. She adds drama to the episode with her rude remarks against Tulsi.
While the excitement for Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi remained at peak, the show came with tears and emotions. Honestly, we missed to see Ronit Roy as Mihir Virani. In the previous season, Amar Upadhaya version of Mihir had died and thus, the show appears to lack continuity with him being Mihir. But Smriti Irani as Tulsi balances it! It is beautiful to see how Mihir appreciates Tulsi for being the manager of the house. The romance is also back! However, we await to see what new the show has to offer as there are times when it still shows how women being together in kitchen is a way to bond for all. The patriarchy still exists and it is still quite evident in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi season 2. Even the internal fights over property drama appear to be old and dusted.
Hints about upcoming twists
Talking about the performances, Smriti Irani's screen presence is something. She literally rules the show and everything appears loaded in nostalgia. The first episode does drops hints on the upcoming twists as well. The 'toofan' is sensed by Gayatri but Tulsi is unaware of it.
