Ya Ali Singer Zubeen Garg passes away: Businesses closed, fans take to streets in Biswanath to mourn his demise

Zubeen Garg, popular singer, passed away on September 19 in tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore. The news of his untimely death came as a huge shock to his fans. Such has been the impact that Golaghat and a few more parts of Assam came to a standstill on September 19. For the unversed, the Assamese singer, who is best known for his 2006 Bollywood hit, Ya Ali from Gangster, passed away at the age of 52. According to various medical reports, the singer was pulled out of the sea by the police and rushed to the hospital. Doctors tried their best, and despite rigorous medical care, they were unable to save him.

People mourn Zubeen's demise

All throughout Assam, the sense of loss and sadness was unparalleled. In Biswanath, the All Assam Students' Union coordinated a march in the honor and remembrance of the singer. Thousands of people ended up joining the march to pay their respects and bid their goodbye to the musician.

A video shared by Truth India showed people on the streets chanting slogans of 'Zubeen da amar houk' (Long live Zubeen) and 'Joy Zubeen da' (Hail Zubeen).

In honor and respect of the singer, all the business establishments in Biswanath were closed for 24 hours.

There were devastating scenes observed in Golaghat as well. A large number of people gathered together, who could be seen crying and grasping the posters of the beloved musician.

Why was Zubeen Garg in Singapore?

The musician was severely injured when he was scuba diving in Singapore. He was there to perform at the 4th Northeast India Festival, which was scheduled for September 20. The Singapore police pulled him out of the water and rushed him to the hospital, where he was treated intensively. The doctors were unfortunately unable to save him, and he passed away in the intensive care unit during the treatment.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that he got to know about Zubeen's death through Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita. Himanta said, "It is very painful news and an immense loss to the state and the nation." He also posted on X, saying, "Today Assam lost one of its favorite sons. I am at a loss for words to describe what Zubeen meant for the state. He has gone too early; this was not the age to go."

"Zubeen's voice had an unmatched ability to energize people, and his music spoke directly to our minds and souls. He has left a void that will never be filled. Our future generations will remember him as a stalwart of Assam's culture, and his works will inspire many more talented artists in the days and years to come," he continued in the post.

He added, "Beyond his music, his connection with people and passion for helping them will always be remembered. I will greatly cherish all my interactions with him." This aptly conveyed what everyone felt about the tragic situation.
