Emraan Hashmi-Yami Gautam's HAQ lands in TROUBLE: Shah Bano's daughter sends legal notice ahead of release

HAQ in legal trouble: Siddiqua Begum, Shah Bano's daughter, sent a legal notice to the filmmakers of the upcoming courtroom drama HAQ, starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, weeks ahead of its planned November 7 release. Begum alleges that the film depicts her mother's life story without the legal heirs' permission. According to news agency ANI, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), producers Junglee Pictures and Baweja Studios, and director Suparn Verma have all received the legal notice.

What does the legal notice say?

The notification submitted by Siddiqua Begum reads, "For immediate restraint on the publication, screening, promotion, or release of the upcoming film." The movie is based on the famous Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum Supreme Court case from 1985, which had a big influence on Indian maintenance laws and women's rights.

Mohammed Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano case

The case started in 1978 when 62-year-old Shah Bano petitioned an Indore court for support from her divorced husband, renowned lawyer Mohammed Ahmed Khan. After getting married in 1932, Shah Bano and Mohammed Ahmed Khan had five kids: two daughters and three sons.

In 1985, the Supreme Court decided that Shah Bano qualified for maintenance under Section 125. The next year, however, the Rajiv Gandhi administration proposed legislation to overturn the court's decision.

HAQ trailer

The new trailer for Haq tells the story of Shazia Bano, who is actually Shah Bano, and her courage to speak out against long-standing Islamic customs. Shazia was assumed to have no choice but to accept her husband's infidelity and the arrival of a second wife. The lawyer-husband severed relations with his ex-wife when the arguments became unmanageable by doing three talaq recitations and paying her alimony.

Shazia goes to the High Court because she can't stand the way Sharia law is being applied. The Justice of India regrettably avoids interfering with religious matters. Thus starts her struggle to be heard in spite of public scrutiny and humiliation.
