Sholay Box Office Collection: The legendary Sholay, which starred Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, and Amjad Khan, among others, is regarded as the best Indian film ever made. On August 15, the movie celebrated its 50th anniversary and continues to be recognised. Even though it is liked and appreciated, it has become a part of popular culture and even a source of memes for Gen Z.
The movie is a cult favourite and was a box-office hit. Here's why it has remained so over the years, even though there are now films that earn at least Rs 500 crore. The popularity of Sholay was unquestionable and well ahead of its time, even though the numbers are now occasionally fabricated, and ticket prices are quite exorbitant.
Sholay was expected to be flop because...
When the film was released, many people anticipated that it would be a massive flop, owing to Bachchan's death at the end and the directors' consideration of rewriting the ending. But it picked up, and how.
Sholay became a hit after its release
A week later, on August 21, 1975, Sholay was released in East Punjab, marking the true turning point, according to Box Office India. Delhi/UP, Bihar, and Central India would all follow suit, as seen by the enthusiastic reception there. When the movie debuted in those areas on October 3, it had already established itself as a blockbuster.
Sholay's record run rewrote box-office history
What came next was unheard of. Sholay played in 28 theatres throughout the nation for 50 weeks in a row (a Golden Jubilee). To put things in perspective, even a movie's 25-week run (Silver Jubilee) at ten theatres was sufficient to label it a blockbuster back then.
Before satellite television and multiplexes progressively altered watching patterns, Sholay not only dominated the first year but also attracted viewers for almost 20 years in repeat reruns. The movie's lifetime theatrical revenue eventually increased to over three times its initial year-one profits.
About Sholay
The film was written by the renowned Salim-Javed team (Salim Khan, Javed Akhtar) and directed by Ramesh Sippy. Sholay earned Rs 15 crore that year despite being produced on a budget of Rs 3 crore. Fifty years hence, the collection would be seen as far higher, given the increased costs of today. It still has the distinction of India's biggest blockbuster after fifty years and probably always will.
